Values Quotes – Erma Bombeck on Spontaneity

Today’s quote is from Erma Bombeck, the famous American humorist, author, and newspaper columnist who loved to highlight suburban home life.

Bombeck stated:
“Humor is a spontaneous, wonderful bit of an outburst that just comes. It’s unbridled, its unplanned, it’s full of surprises.”

For over 30 years, Bombeck entertained Americans with her humor and thought-provoking ideas based on the life of a midwestern suburban housewife.

She embraced the value of Spontaneity.

As a differentiating value, Spontaneity means expressing natural feelings without constraint. If you are speaking in front of an audience, it’s also known as ad-libbing.

Whether Bombeck was writing a column, or speaking on radio or TV, wonderful bits of outbursts would just come out. I believe she sometimes surprised herself.

Some of her great humorous quotes include: “Ironed sheets are a health hazard” or “Insanity is hereditary. You can catch it from your kids.

But other spontaneous comments from Bombeck prompted us to think, such as “Laughter rises out of tragedy, when you need it the most, and rewards you for your courage.”

Do you have something thought-provoking or humorous ready to burst forth out of you? Maybe it’s time you embrace the value of spontaneity – and let it out. You just might be surprised at the positive impact you will have on others.

Today’s value was selected from the “Diversity-Flexibility” category, based on the e-book Developing Your Differentiating Value.
