Values Quotes – Dan Quayle on Allegiance

Today’s quote is from Dan Quayle, who served as the 44th Vice President of the United States from 1989 to 1993.

As a strong believing Christian, Mr. Quayle made the following pledge:
I pledge allegiance to the Christian flag, and to the Savior, for whose Kingdom it stands, one savior, crucified, risen, and coming again, with life and liberty for all who believe.”

That says a lot about his allegiance.

As a differentiating value, allegiance means commitment; binding to a course of action; and loyalty.

It’s easy to admire someone’s allegiance to country or king, especially when made within a group setting and on safe ground.

But what about showing one’s allegiance when standing alone, even within a hostile environment?

During Dan Quayle’s term as vice president, he was widely ridiculed in the media, for various reasons. Yet he did not waiver in his commitment to country – or Christ. Quayle demonstrated his allegiance to Christ by making such a bold statement in public.

Regardless of anyone’s opinion about him, you can’t help but admire Quayle’s willingness to show his allegiance, even if at times he was standing alone.

That’s a type of commitment and loyalty that we can all learn from.
