Values Quotes – The Value of Carefulness

Todays quote is from an unknown author. But it’s one worth pondering.

Do you know this quote?

“Caution is not cowardly. Carelessness is not courage.”

I think this speaks to the value of carefulness.

As a differentiating value, Carefulness means being cautious or painstaking; unhurried and with concern and dignity.

Like when a soldier is careful when he comes across a minefield, we too are wise to be careful when we are faced with our own minefields. When emotions of those around us are running hot, it pays to be careful with our choice of words and actions. When the risk of failure carries with it extreme danger, it pays to be cautious and unhurried.

Or when we’re doing something important for someone else, we’re careful. We show concern. We take out time.

As stated in today’s quote, it’s a good reminder not to confuse being cautious with lack of courage. In fact, sometimes the decision to be careful requires a lot of courage, especially when others are pushing you to hurry up and get things done.

Here’s the secret for when to embrace this value. When we really care about the PEOPLE around us and want to make a positive difference in their lives, then be CAREFUL. Because it means you are FULL of CARE.

Today’s value was selected from the “Pragmatism-Prudence” category, based on the e-book Developing Your Differentiating Values.
