Values Quotes – The Value of Contentment

Todays quote is from an unknown author, yet it seems to be highlighted in many different places.

Do you know this quote?

“The secret of contentment is the realization that life is a gift, not a right.”

It’s a simple message that says a lot.

As a differentiating value, Contentment means happiness or satisfaction with the current situation. It’s about not taking for granted what you have right now.

Of course, I know that with some people this value does not resonate well – such as super high achievers and extremely competitive individuals. They are rarely happy with the current situation, which is what motivates them to keep improving and doing more or better than before.

But there is a difference between being content and being complacent. One is healthy. One is not.

I see this like climbing a mountain. Yes, the goal is to reach the top, but along the journey there are beautiful plateaus where you can stop climbing for a bit, rest, and enjoy the view. Appreciate where you’ve come from, and those you’ve brought along. Show gratitude to those who have helped you get where you are. And be thankful for the opportunity to make the climb in the first place.

That’s what today’s quote reminds me to do. Find contentment in the gift of the moment, and share your joy with those who are with you on this journey of life.

Today’s value was selected from the “Fun-Recreation” category, based on the e-book Developing Your Differentiating Values.
