Values Quotes – Eric Hoffer on Potency
Todays quote is from Eric Hoffer, an American author and social philosopher who proudly referred to himself as simply a longshoreman.
A thoughtful quote from Hoffer is:
“We are more prone to generalize the bad than the good. We assume that the bad is more potent and contagious.”
Hoffer had a gift for recognizing the intricacies of human nature and the value of potency.
As a differentiating value, Potency means possessing strength; or effective in small quantities.
Isn’t it amazing how potent a smile can be on others? Just consider what happens when a guest speaker walks onto a stage and smiles at the audience. It can instantly change the mood of many people all at once. And it can prepare the hearts and minds of others to listen to what he or she has to say.
Of course, a frown or stern face is also potent. Suddenly everyone expects bad news, or worse.
It’s interesting that Hoffer suggests we tend to give more weight to what might be bad than good.
Why?
Because it takes less work, and anyone can play the role of bringing bad news. And like gossip, it’s also easy to share.
But the really potent stuff is actually good news. Great communicators create hope, encourage, and inspire. After all, it takes faith to believe in what’s good.
And when we’re truly moved to share good news, that’s the most potent motivator of all.
