Why you should consider your spouse a saint
Since the beginning, the Catholic Church has canonized around 3,000 people, recognizing them as saints. Maybe the number is so low because the process can take decades or even centuries to complete.
Or maybe very few individuals are (almost) perfect enough, at least in the sight of God and public opinion.
Of course, God has already found a way to make us perfect – through the death and resurrection of His son, Jesus Christ. But influencing public opinion is something beyond our capabilities. (even if you think you can, public opinion is fickle)
Power You Possess
While you likely need to give up the dream of becoming a saint in the eyes of man, there is someone who you have the power to recognize as a saint: your spouse.
Yes, you and everyone else know that they are not perfect. But there is something that qualifies them for consideration. You chose to marry them! So there must be something rather special about them.
Consider the differentiating value of Saintliness, which means:
- Model of excellence or perfection of a kind.
- Having no equal.
Is your spouse a model of excellence in your eyes?
Did you choose them to be your husband or wife because you saw “no equal” in anyone else?
Deciding if your spouse is a saint is in your hand. You are the only person that matters. Yes, you.
Surprise Benefits
Guess what happens when you choose to see your spouse as a saint? It means:
- Your love is pure.
- You heart is right.
- Your thoughts are holy.
- You are being like Christ.
- You make God happy.
(Are you feeling a little more saint-like, yet?)
And for those few times that your spouse isn’t exactly being a saint, you also possess the gift of grace. Wow, that’s pretty powerful!
Now imagine if you and your spouse both viewed each other as saints. Sounds a little like heaven….
Can you see what God sees in your spouse? Pretty amazing, huh?
