Values Quotes – Ralph Waldo Emerson on Moderation

Todays quote is from Ralph Waldo Emerson, the famous American essayist, lecturer, and poet.

An insightful quote from Emerson is:
“Moderation in all things, especially moderation.”

This is a brilliant twist to the popular saying: “Everything in moderation.”

As a differentiating value, Moderation means avoiding extremes or excesses; restraint; or keeping within reasonable limits. As Emerson suggests, this is an important value when applied in moderation.

Most people associate moderation to things like eating and drinking. It can also apply to things like how much TV you watch, how many hours a week you work, or even how much time you spend exercising. You’ll lead a healthier and happier life if you keep things in reasonable limits.

But what about things like adultery, gambling, or embezzlement?  If it’s only a little, what can it hurt? A lot! Just one time can have lasting negative effects.

In other words, moderation does NOT apply to all areas of life.

So when embracing the value of moderation, remember Emerson’s words: “Moderation in all things, especially moderation.”

Today’s value was selected from the “Harmony-Order” category, based on the e-book Developing Your Differentiating Values.
