Values Quotes – Richard Wagner on Joyfulness

Todays quote is from Richard Wagner, the famous German composer and conductor who is primarily known for his operas.

A beautiful quote from Wagner is:
“Joy is not in things; it is in us.”

What a wonderful reminder about what truly matters in life, and the value of joyfulness.

As a differentiating value, Joyfulness means the emotion of great happiness; or full of high-spirited delight.

So, when did you last experience great happiness? What had to transpire for you to be filled with high-spirited delight?

When you look back over your life, I suspect true moments of joyfulness occurred when you allowed yourself to be fully immersed in a personal experience.

  • Maybe it was a time when you were completely engaged in a project because you could totally visualize the outcome, and were motivated to finish, no matter what.
  • Maybe it was that moment on vacation you realized you had finally forgotten about work or any concerns at home.  That’s an important point to be able to call it a real holiday.
  • Or, maybe it was at a concert – even one of Wagner’s operas – where you were thoroughly engrossed in the music, where you felt consumed by delight.

Joyfulness is something we all desire to experience.

So, if you want to experience it again, maybe you need to ponder over what you are willing to immerse yourself in…. And remember, joyfulness is found inside you.
