Earning the Right to be Recognized

People do business with people they know, like and trust.

This helps explain why so many entrepreneurs and small business owners spend so much time networking at business events. It’s about earning the right to be recognized.

As a differentiating value, Recognition means acknowledging the existence or legality of something; accept to be what is claimed. When you can walk into a room of prospective customers and everyone recognizes you, then the chances of growing your business are much higher.

Another way to look at the importance of recognition for a business is the AIDA marketing model:

  • Awareness: no one will buy from you if they don’t know about you. No recognition.
  • Interest: no one will buy from you if they’re not interested in what you offer. Minimal recognition.
  • Desire: no one will buy from you if they’re not motivated to learn more. Passive recognition.
  • Action: no one will buy from you if they have no incentive to act. Active recognition.

One way to achieve recognition is by getting involved in your local chamber, a club, and/or a charity.
