The Sovereign Individual
Sovereignty is generally thought of as a good thing. It means freedom from external control – which to most people means free from the abusive power of someone in a position of authority (such as a dictator, a king, leaders in government or even business).
It also means autonomy – which to most people means independence (this generally translates to: “I can do whatever I darn well please.”).
After all, who wants to be controlled or ruled by someone (or something) else?
But sovereignty also means a self-governing state.
In other words, as sovereign individuals it means we should be self-governing. Each of us possesses the authority – and power – to govern ourselves (such as showing self-restraint, demonstrating respect for others, being prudent with our resources, and effectively caring for ourselves and those who depend on us).
But with power comes a problem: power corrupts.
In a world where increasingly individuals value their own sovereignty, how will each one of us prevent personal corruption?
How are you managing your own sovereign state?
