Values Quotes – Walter Cronkite on Success

Today’s quote is from Walter Cronkite, the renowned broadcast journalist best known as anchorman for the CBS Evening News (1962 – 1981).

A great quote from Cronkite is:

“Success is more permanent when you achieve it without destroying your principles.”

During his 44 years of reporting, Cronkite interviewed all kinds of different people who had achieved success. He saw when success was sustaining and when it quickly crumbled. The difference was a foundation of solid principles.

As a differentiating value, Success means the achievement of one’s aim or goal: or a state of prosperity or fame.

Who doesn’t want to be successful – at something?

Maybe you have a desire to attain a specific goal. Maybe you desire to be famous. Or maybe you just want all the wealth you perceive comes with certain success.

To achieve a stated goal is admirable and it feels good. But if such success is not founded upon good principles – such as respect, honesty, integrity, truth, and loyalty – then it might not last.

The best success is the one where you’re still happy with yourself when you achieve your goal. Even better is to be surrounded by family and friends who continue to be supportive because you maintained your principles.

And you have someone to share in all that success!

Today’s value was selected from the “Freedom-Prosperity” category, based on the e-book Developing Your Differentiating Value.
