Values Quotes – Edward B. Butler on Enthusiasm

Today’s quote is from Edward B. Butler, an American businessman who founded Butler Brothers department stores; and later went on to become a landscape painter and helped form the Pasadena Society of Artists.

A great quote from Butler is:

“One man has enthusiasm for 30 minutes, another for 30 days, but it is the man who has it for 30 years who makes a success of his life.”

Just consider how Edward and his brother started a mail-order company, back in 1877, that eventually became one of the largest wholesalers in America after developing thousands of Ben Franklin Stores and Federated Stores, both of which were franchised five and dime stores.

Butler clearly made a success of his life, as he understood and tapped the value of enthusiasm.

As a differentiating value, enthusiasm means a feeling of excitement; exuberance; or zealous fervor.

So how does this value resonate with you?

I’m sure you’ve experienced elements of enthusiasm at various points in your life. The question is, how long did it last? Have you found the sustainable source that will drive your need to keep going, to push forward and ultimately make a difference in the lives of others?

For some, they have found this in their faith, in their trust in God. It’s like an endless supply of energy that keeps their enthusiasm alive, and for more than a few days. It lasts a lifetime!

Today’s value was selected from the “Enthusiasm-Teamwork” category, based on the e-book Developing Your Differentiating Values.
