Values Quotes – Franklin D. Roosevelt on Freedom
Welcome to Values Quotes. I’m Robert Ferguson.
Today’s quote is from Franklin D. Roosevelt – also known but his initials FDR – who was the 32nd President of the United States.
A great quote from FDR is:
“In the truest sense, freedom cannot be bestowed; it must be achieved.”
As a central figure in world events during the mid-20th century, and leading the United States during a time of worldwide economic crisis and world war, FDR was keenly aware of the value of freedom. He understood what was required – the sacrifices – to “achieve” freedom.
As a differentiating value, Freedom means the power to act or speak or think without externally imposed restraints.
For all of us, there are constant restraints being put upon us that limit or inhibit our freedom. Many of these restraints are created by us. We limit our own freedom to learn, to grow, and achieve.
If we value our freedom, maybe we need to embrace FDR’s thinking and stop waiting for someone to bestow it upon us. Maybe it’s time to decide to make the sacrifices necessary to achieve it.
